On Tuesday, February 11th, local leaders and advocates came together for an engaging panel discussion on the power of advocacy and its role in addressing homelessness. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, from defining advocacy to exploring legislative efforts in Austin that could impact Houston’s homelessness response.
Our featured speakers:
The conversation kicked off with panelists sharing their personal definitions of advocacy. Our moderator and public policy manager for the Greater Houston Partnership, Hannah Cobb, reflected on how a visit from the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce to learn more about Houston’s homeless response system led to 115 individuals securing housing — an example of advocacy’s ripple effect beyond city borders.
Council Member Ramirez emphasized advocacy’s role in shaping policy, acknowledging Houston’s past successes in reducing homelessness while stressing the need for renewed efforts given recent increases. Our director of public affairs, Jamey Caruthers, described advocacy as “the biggest lever we have” highlighting the importance of strategic, data-driven engagement with legislators.
A key theme throughout the discussion was the evolving political landscape in Austin, with new legislative dynamics influencing homelessness policy. With a new Speaker of the House and shifting political dynamics, the discussion highlighted the importance of understanding these changes and how they can affect advocacy efforts.
The discussion concluded with a call to action: advocacy starts with individuals. Whether by contacting legislators, joining advocacy groups, or mobilizing communities, grassroots efforts remain a powerful force in shaping policies that address homelessness.
