World Homeless Day 2022

Allison Zapata • October 10, 2022

World Homeless Day is observed internationally every year on Oct. 10 to bring focus to the issues of homelessness and inadequate housing.

Did you know?

  • More than 3,200 people in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties experience homelessness on any given night
  • Homelessness reduces life expectancy, taking 20-30 years off one’s life
  • The primary causes of homelessness are affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, and low wages

How has the Coalition made a difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness?

As the lead agency to Houston’s homeless response system, The Way Home, the Coalition coordinates the efforts of over 100 direct service partners. Our collaboration has:

  • Housed more than 25,000 people in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties since 2012, as shared in the recent The New Times - Headway article “How Houston Moved 25,000 People From the Streets Into Homes of Their Own.”
  • Provided 33,000 employment-related services to over 4,500 people in the last 5 years that have not only connected individuals to employment but increased income as well
  • Led local advocacy for the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to allocate more affordable housing funds to permanent supportive housing (PSH )

We are only able to accomplish this through the help of our incredible partners, the expert staff at the Coalition, and donors like you! Today, on World Homeless Day, we hope that you will choose to recommit to the Coalition’s vision of a community where everyone has a safe place to call home. Here’s how:

Consider recognizing World Homeless Day and the Coalition’s 40th birthday month by making an impact, not just once or twice, but on a recurring basis! Every dollar you give to the Coalition leverages an additional $47 in public funding to help the most vulnerable people in our community.

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Thank you for helping the Coalition work towards a future where that is a reality.
